1992 - Roscoff, France

In 1992 we stayed in a gite a few miles south of Roscoff. For various reasons this holiday was unusual and this is reflected in the short entries I made each day.

Tuesday 14 July
Left home 0835
Arrive Plymouth 2038
It took 12 hours to do this journey because we went from south Wales via Sussex to see my mother in hospital where she was seriously ill.
Wednesday 15 July
Left hotel 0700
Arrived gite 1535
Went to crêperie in Landivisiau.
Thursday 16 July
Explored coast between Roscoff and west to Plouescat. Weather cloudy.
Ate at La Marina – Port de Moguériec. Had crab and lobster. Crab OK but lobster – yuk too much garlic (all agreed).
Friday 17 July
Rain first thing in the morning. Sunny by the afternoon.
Went to Plouescat in the evening for a pizza.
Saturday 18 July
Hot and sunny.
Spent day on the Plage de Keremma, Plouescat. We had a bay all to ourselves.
In the evening we ate at Les Voyageurs in Berven.
Sunday 19 July
Wet – stayed in ‘till noon. Went to Roscoff for lunch and a look around. Then went to look at Ile Callot – will return.
Tea in the gite then games.
Monday 20 July
Overcast. Walked over causeway to Ile Callot.
Ate in a small hotel in Landivisiau – Hotel de l’Avenue.
Tuesday 21 July
Went to Landivisiau to catch train to Brest but they only run on weekends and holidays.
Instead went to Brignogan-Plage and sunbathed all afternoon.
In the evening we ate at Plan d’Eau Crêperie.
Wednesday 22 July
Went to Morlaix to catch the train to Brest. Walked around Brest and after lunch went to Oceanopolis. It was a long way to walk. Oceanopolis OK but not worth the walk.
Took the bus back to the station then traveled by TGV to Morlaix.
Thursday 23 July
Good news! Extra day’s holiday. As there are no ferries from Roscoff, we have been transferred to St Malo one day later on Thursday. Brittany Ferries paying for the hotel in St Malo.
I have no idea why I didn’t write it in my diary but the ferry incident was the most exciting part of the holiday. On our way to Brest we noticed the Plymouth – Roscoff ferry in port and thought it was rather unusual. I can’t remember now how we found out but a day or so after we crossed to France the Quiberon caught fire and was adrift at sea all night. It was later towed to Brest for repairs. Brittany Ferries didn’t tell us this even though we were on one of their holidays and only a few miles from Roscoff. It must have been on this day we went to the ferry terminal in Roscoff to see what was happening. First we were offered a place on a ferry a few days earlier than planned but I refused that so they offered to pay for my petrol to drive to St Malo and a night in a hotel as the ferry was not going until the following day. Back to the diary…
We then went to Ile de Batz by boat and hired bikes to ride around the island. Evening meal at Les Voyageurs.
Friday 24 July
Visited Huelgoat and walked round various rocks.
Started eating in a Morlaix crêperie and [because the service was so slow] finished with an ice cream two hours later by the lake.
Saturday 25 July
In the morning visited numerous calvaries until the boys were well bored. Lunch on the patio and the afternoon on the beach.
Ate at Restaurant du Guillec, Point au Barres.
Sunday 26 July
Stayed around the gite in the morning and went to the beach pm. Dorothy had too much sun and she declined the offer of a pizza at Plouescat.
Monday 27 July
Rain first thing. After it cleared up we went to Lambader chapel and Plouvorn church.
In the afternoon we went to the beach at Carantec. In the evening it was crêpes by the lake.
Tuesday 28 July
Out early to St Pol de Leon and the market where we bought pins and embroidery. Then on to Leclerc for booze and chocs to take home.
Afternoon – beach
Evening – Les Voyageurs.
Wednesday 29 July
Up at 0630, packed and way by 1010. Too hot to stop in Dinan and locals rude in Dinan Port. Arrived St Malo 1430 but it took an hour to find the hotel. It was rather small but clean [It had red flock wallpaper on the walls and ceiling].
In the evening we went into St Malo and the boys each had a picture drawn. Then we had a pizza.
Thursday 30 July
Up at 0730 and after breakfast arrived at port by 0845. Ferry left at 1100. Very bored for the next 9 hours. Arrived Portsmouth 1900 and home by 2215.
